GW Bush ends running career
Question:
The NY times said the Prez has developed severe knee pain while running. He switched to an elliptical trainer and is looking aknee surgery.
He was never a distance runner to begin with, just a 20 minute a day jogger.
Response:
MIZUNO ___ You are kidding! No Way. Amazing. I became a Mizuno convert in ‘03. I think it’s amazing….because….you gotta "look for" Mizunos in general. Most
running shops don’t even carry them. It’s not like you’re going to walk into a typical running shop and come out with Mizunos on. That’s rare. Ascis and NB control most of the retail shelf space in running shops. Nike muscles in and gets its space…some times you can find scraps left for Brooks and Saucony…..but it’s not common at all to see a pair of Mizunos on
a rack. It’s just not a shoe you stumble upon or have marketed to death to you. A podiatrist must have tipped of Bush to get into these shoes… MIZUNOs are readily available here in Southern California, at the major chains. Bush has the equivalent of a running coach who put him onto Mizunos. The last time I noticed, he was wearing Mizuno Creations. These MIZUNO shoes do seem well made and well designed (good uppers, breathable, lightweight, carefully executed), but I found the cushioning a little stiff for my weight (160-165) — maybe it’s that plastic "wave" thing? — and so I generally run in other pairs. In the future I may try on some different Mizuno models to see if the density of the cushioning material varies from model to model.

I wonder what is more important obstacle in running: age or number of years. GW has been running since 1972. I’ve been running seasonally since 1969 and year-round since 1977. I now notice a decline and some sore knees some of the time. I know very few people who’ve been doing it this length of time.
Since 1968 and still optimistic. From talking to exrunners, the knees have to be the most frequent reason. Combination of lack of understanding, running through pain, running on pavement, lack of recovery plan. We want to step out the door almost every day and run roads for the same distance with no other investment. Past injuries overcome: PFS/Chondr?, AT, MTSS, ITBS, PF, Anter. Tib, ankle spr., ham tear, sciatica?, calf tear, sore quad, …, not all from just running however.
Response:
…ya know who is a real runner ….Edwards…the democratic guy from s.c. i believe…..he does 40 miles/week.
Nah, everyone knows that 45 miles per week is the minimum to be considered a real runner. **ducks as things come flyin’ this way.

Noakes has a chart that shows after age 30 there is a steady decline. I would guess age. GW has been running since 1972. I’ve been running seasonally since 1969 and year-round since 1977. I now notice a decline and some sore knees some of the time.
Knock on wood I havn’t had knee or joint problems but I have lots of running friends in my age group that are battling injuries. They are trying to maintain the same level of training as if they were in their 40’s and mother nature takes exception when not given rest breaks. Some of it is our parents. — Doug Freese "Caveat Lector"

FWIW, some various NB pairs I have in the house: -NB 763s say Made in USA of Domestic and Imported Materials -NB 764s say Made in USA of Imported Materials -NB 831s say Made in China -NB 705 trail shoes say Made in China – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – New Balance running shoes are mostly made (assembled, anyhow) in the U.S. — are they? i know it varies from shoe model to shoe model….seems most of the models i buy (high end more expensive models & their racing flats) have always been made in china. i keep hearing this about nb but it seems to me the vast majority of their shoes are made in china completely…and not made in china & assembled in the usa. i could be wrong. As I said in response to Donovan’s post, the NB shoes I’ve checked lately (880s and 1022s) have been made in USA. I haven’t looked at the whole line. — Brian P. says… No idea where they get them, since most stores don’t carry them. The only retail store I know of in NY that have most of the Mizuno line is Paragon. Even the running stores don’t seem to have them.
The last time I bought shoes was from a Finish Line in the local mall. Two sales guys actually tried to bully me into buying Mizunos, but I bought Asics 2080’s instead. They were incredulous. At the time I figured that maybe they simply made more money on the Mizuno, but maybe they were onto something. -Fountainhead

No they’re not. Look at the labels some time — nearly all of their shoes say "made in China". What you’re saying is AFAIK only true of the overpriced yet mediocre 1300/1700/2000 series.
I just looked at the label of an 880 the other day: "Made in USA". Same for my old 1022s that just finally wore out. The woman at the running store told me she’s heard they’re trying to get more of their running shoe operation back into the U.S. Since she actually has dealings with shoe companies and distributors I’m wary of dismissing what she says out of hand; but in any case the labels speak for themselves. Saucony was another made-in-USA holdout for a while, but they’ve pretty much given up. — Brian P. FWIW … having attended these running classes and spent some time with club members (where you can see what people train in), it seems that Mizuno trainers are reasonably popular among serious runners. No idea where they get them, since most stores don’t carry them. The only retail store I know of in NY that have most of the Mizuno line is Paragon. Even the running stores don’t seem to have them. I guess this would be an inappropriate time to ask how many Joe Schmoes’ company-paid insurance plan would cover an MRI to determine the cause of "occasional" knee pain when running? — Dirk (Leverage this information, already, you wussy-boy Democrats!) ** "I think mostly we just grew up and realized that there really wasn’t a cosmic Santa Claus out there that was prepared to do our bidding every time we send off some hair-brained prayer. If god were available to answer my prayers, all conservatives would be in big trouble because their faces would be some shade of orange and they would be completely infertile and would have to eat standing up because of the tail protruding from their rear end." –kstahl explains it all for you **
