Blown air pocket detection
Question:
My experience is consistent with the last reply; when I blew out the air pocket in my Nike’s, the whoosing sound gave it away. However, this was only evident after a wet day of running. I know people swear by Nike, but I was a little ticked off; I not only blew out the heel air pocket in one shoe, but I also blew out the front pocket in the other shoe. All of this by a guy who runs very lightly (3-4 miles a day) and who religiously runs through a city park. The heal pocket is pretty easily to detect; just mash on the heel with your hand. The front pocket will give itself away by the sound. One final comment; don’t continue running in shoes with blown air pockets. I learned that one the hard way. In my rage that the pockets had blown, I continued running in the shoes for several weeks. By the time I finally did buy another pair, I had already injury a calf (same side as the blow heel bladder). Even two months later, I’m still having problems with that calf. If you think a bladder is shot; get some new shoes.

<snip My problem was with two pair of Nike Triax Air Structures bought in succession. The first pair had 300 miles, the second 60 when the pockets were punctured. <Snip John
I have an idea! Stop running through construction sites, glass factories, hardware stores, and sewing shops! This should reduce the number of punctures substantially.
Kyle I got Triax, and I like ‘em.
Response:
Someone asked how to detect a blown air pocket for a pair of Nike’s. It is easy. I heard the whooshing sound of air escaping from the blown pocket every time I hit the ground with that shoe. Also, when I held the shoe in my hand I could see where the puncture was and by compressing the sole, I could force the air out of the pocket. My problem was with two pair of Nike Triax Air Structures bought in succession. The first pair had 300 miles, the second 60 when the pockets were punctured. Please note that the Nike has a lifetime warranty on the pockets–when my first one punctured, the running shoe store where I bought them gladly gave me another pair. When the second pocket went less than 10 days later, same thing (with a little head scratching on their part
). Finally, I have had several reports from other runners swearing by this particular shoe (in one case 1200 miles an no problems). I’m now running in a pair of Asics which are not as comfortable but…fool me once etc. John
