Question:
I heard rumors that Asics is going to put their homepage on the Web in January 1996. Does anyone have any news on this? And does anyone know of sites from big running shoes companies? http://www.ifi.uio.no/~arsaellb/running.html

I’ve been running on Asics Gel-Exult training shoes for three years now putting in about 20 – 25 miles per week. The shoes have gel inserts in the heel and a special cushioning insert in the forefoot. Iv’e seen them on sale for as low as $65 but generally they run around $90.

Response:
The best advice is to go to a local technical running shop not a sporting goods store and bring your old shoes in for an evaluation. They should ask you questions on milage, running surfaces, etc. Then have you try on several different shoes and jog up and down the block to conpare the "rides" of each shoe. If you were comfortable in your old shoes then stay with them, unless one of the other shoes feels much better.

NB sneakers? NB makes running shoes. Go to a specialty running store (not in a big mall) even if you have to drive a bit. A store that carries most of the following brands: Asics, Brooks, New Balance, Nike, Addidas, Reebok, etc. A store that does not have multiple branches. A store where you see some of the same people each time you visit. A store that carries models with the depth comparable to that of www.roadrunnersports.com. Try some on for size, cushioning and support. Read the return policy. If you can, test each pair on a treadmill at the local gym before running with them outside. Most stores will give a sizeable discount if you say you want the running club discount. Then drop the name of a local running club. Ask when they expect to have sales. In almost every case purchase a pair of Spenco insoles to replace the standard insoles that come with the shoes. Spenco insoles are closed cell neoprene with a green nylon fabric on the top. Check each pair to be certain the insoles do come out. I think Addidas insoles come glued to the liner of the shoe. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – general rule low arch=motion control shoe / normal, med, neutral arch=stability shoe / hi arch=cushion shoe me, i use asics both the stability, kayano and cushion shoes nimbus III plodzilla I wear New Balance sneakers, are those considered good for running? IMO, New Balance has some good shoes, but it’ll all depend on what’s best for your feet. check out a running store where they’ll know their shoes well, and can check out your foot type and your gait and can recommend something that suits you. there are hordes of other shoes out there, but take your time and be sure you are happy with the shoes before plunking down yer money for ‘em. look here: http://www.runningroom.com/ under running tips, there’s a section on shoe buying. and try a google search or something to find more on this stuff. best of luck, Cam

Brand is not very important, well let’s say any brand as long as it is good is not much of a factor. What is a big factor is the right shoe in any brand. All the good brands make different shoes for the different needs of different runners. I use NB 831’s. I run neutral and like a light weight trainer. Any good running store will have the 831’s, but you are not likely to find them in one of your Mega Super Sports Stores. You are also not likely to find anyone there that has any idea how to help you choose the right shoe, other than to tell you that what ever they have to sell is great. Find a real running store and have them help you pick the right shoe. I like NB and I have been buying them for about 30 years. But other brands are equally good. — Joseph E. It depends on the type of shoe you need, all you can get here is advice on particular brands. Go with Adidas, Asics, New Balance, Saucony, any brand EXCEPT the evil Nikes, they cause more injuries than Roger Hunter did while he was still practicing medicine.

depends on how you run (how your feet land, what distance you do, what weight you are, whether you’ve got any problem injuries etc.) go to a "speacialist" running shop and ask there. take some old running shoes along if you have any. andrew — http://www.acooke.org

When I ran marathons in the 80’s New Balance were the in shoes. Trying to get back to it and am not sure what shoes to go for as I build up from 15 to 40 miles per week. any suggestions? Before you buy.
Response:
There’s no way anyone here can tell you what shoes are best for you without knowing your age, your weight, how you run, e.g. pronation, heel strike, etc. Even then, it would be hard to say. If you liked NB when you used them before, you’ll probably like them now. I wouldn’t worry about what shoes are "in" at the moment. When I ran marathons in the 80’s New Balance were the in shoes. I would not worry about brands, but I would worry about choice of shoe within the brand and the fit. Make a trip to a real running store and if possible bring your current running shoes with you. Let them look at the wear pattern, and your running/walking style. They can make some good suggestions. BTW I run with NB and I have for many years. Response:
If you have access to a good running store, a lot of times they will put you on a treadmill, analyze your stride and footstrike. That, coupled with wear patterns on your current shoes should be a good start in getting you the right kind of shoes for your running style. Good luck! : wide. Does anyone suggest a good alternative to the Anodyne’s? The Icarus must’ve been a disaster for you; they’re about as far from the Anodyne as you can get. Try the Air Analog (the shoe Nike replaced the Anodyne with). polar bear — Strikeouts are fascist. Throw ground balls; they’re more democratic. – "Crash" Davis to "Nuke" LaLoosh in "Bull Durham"

I have been running for quite a few years and run approx. 80 to 100 km per week. I pronate quite badly and as a result need and use orthotics. Until about a year ago I used several pairs of Nike Air Anodyne, which I think are the best runners ever made for me. Since then I have tried Saucony 9000, Nike air Icarus, Asics GT2000, and have not found them to be nearly as satisfactory as the Anodynes. I have a fairly narrow foot and have been told that Brooks and Mizuno would most likely be too wide. Does anyone suggest a good alternative to the Anodyne’s?

I remember the old days when I wore size 8.5. I could go and buy shoes, sneakers, ski boots, whatever in size 9.5 and they all fit. Now I wear size 9 (dress shoes), size 10 (adidas), size 10 (nike pegasus), size 9.5 (asics ds trainers), size 10 (asics 2030), size 9 (nike crosstrainers). Maybe it’s a plot to keep down the mail order retailers. I think that fit is paramount so I don’t buy shoes I haven’t tried on. -ssloth
