Motion Control shoe comparison
Question:
Hi Eduardo, I have a pair of Beasts and really like them. Am shopping for a new pair and am considering the Beast or the Asics MC Plus based on what I have read about it. Other ‘maximum’ motion control shoes include the Saucony Grid Stabil Classic and Reebok Ventilator DMX. For a full list check www.aapsm.org/runshoe.html.
Paul/Greg – I just started running in Beasts. At first I ran in them "out of the box" but had some problems….they let me pronate a bit more than I should. My running store suggested I try Superfeet inserts with them, and they made an incredible difference. I’ve never run with inserts before, but I think this has made me a believer I’d really like anyone else’s experience with inserts…brands, which are best for which purposes, etc. Thanks… –Rainman….

I’ve been using a Birkenstock insert to help with plantar fasciitis with a partial response. I’m going for an assessment re: custom inserts on Wednesday. No doubt they will want to sell me some but I have insurance that covers so whatever it takes to make me pain-free. Thanks for the suggestion though Rainman. Eduardo, I’m 5′8 and started running at about 180 lbs. The guy at the shoe store watched me walk, checked my feet and street-shoes, and said that I have a standard arch and over-pronate. He recommended Brooks Beast or Mizuno Mercury. I got the Beast and really like them so far. However, this is just me and my feet. I suggest going to the right kind of running store for the best shoe advise. Best wishes, Greg — Greg – ChicagoLand note: email replies should remove RUN from address —
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Anyone here have any experience with both the Asics MC Plus and NB 1121 (or 1120)? I’m running in the Asics right now, and would like to try the NB, but my local running stores don’t carry it in my size. Any other recommendations of a motion control shoe for a "heavy" (185lb, 6′1") runner? — Eduardo Suastegui "Test everything. Hold on to the good." (remove ‘701′ when replying via e-mail)
Response:
I’ve just started using NB 1121s and am very happy with them at the moment. Having worn Nike, Asics, Saucony, New Balance and Reebok motion control shoes, I would say that all have good motion control, but some are more suitable for the individual wearer (foot). I have a narrow foot, but a wide toe area and thus must have a large toe box. 1121s fit this bill. Don’t disregard other fitting considerations when looking for a motion control shoe. There are enough around to suit most feet. It may end up costing a bit of money and time before you find the match for your foot. I was told the 1121’s provide the greatest motion control of all running shoes. I don’t know if this is true and I have no other experience with other motion shoes to compare with. Tom Phillips
I’m having pretty good luck with my first pair of Brooks Beasts…been running in them about a month with superfeet inserts. My running store recommended them as the Godzilla of motion control shoes. FWIW… –Rainman…

I need a size 12. And yes, I pronate like crazy

This may or may not help. I bought some NB 991’s a year ago on the *advice* of shoe store sales people. Almost from day one I had shin splints and sore calves. I took the summer off and began running again in the fall, with the same results. Finally I saw a podiatrist (this was after I got superfeet inserts.) He said in no uncertain terms I needed a serious motion control shoe since I had developed a collapsing arch and pronated like crazy. This also caused back pain. I called New Balance and told them I was sold the wrong shoe and they sent me to a New Balance store where the manager exchanged the 991’s for a pair of 1121’s. I wear them with Superfeet. All I can say is the splints stopped almost immediately, and the back pain went away in a few weeks. I’ve never tried the Asics but I am about your height and weight (6 feet 185lbs.) I find the 1121’s have a rather "solid" feel and took some getting used to since I was used to a lighter shoe. But now I wouldn’t trade them for gold ingots (but I still have only had them for a five weeks.) I was told the 1121’s provide the greatest motion control of all running shoes. I don’t know if this is true and I have no other experience with other motion shoes to compare with. Tom Phillips

Eduardo – you may want to look at the Nike Durham’s also. I’m 6′ and 200 lbs., also with large fairly flat feet – 13’s and I like the Durham’s. I ran once with some Asics 2060’s and knees started hurting quickly. Went back for a new pair of Durham’s and glad I did. Good luck, Eric

Are you a pronator? I have a pair that I used exactly 7 miles and discovered quickly I do not need motion control. It’s a well made shoe. What size do you need? I was planning on selling this pair. They are basically brand new.
