Cuboid Syndrome
Question:
Well, it wasn’t cuboid syndrome at all, according to the podiatrist. Inflamed peroneal tendons, both feet. He advised $350 orthotics and a 3 week layoff. I said no layoff, I have to run and I’ll think about the orthotics after I do some research.
Do you have an alternate sport in mind if you do big damage? Other than the obvious injury what did he claim was the cause that he felt ortotics would solve? I understand your reluctance since many of the foot vets prescribe orthosis’ for headaches. I’m doing that. Traded in the Gel Kayano VIIs for a pair of NB 764s today, skipping the 25K tomorrow and will cut mileage to 4-4 mile runs per week.
At least cut back with NSAIDs and closely monitor the discomfort. Anyone have any experience with these problems? What do you guys think about orthotics?
You might as well ask what everyone thinks of marriage. You will get lots of anecdotal data will not help you much. If you still experience pain and you don’t want the custom try the off-the-shelf type and see it it helps. This assumes you are (over)pronating. If this does not help then custom made may be your salvation. I happen to have great success with mine, which means basically nothing. I’ve seen lots of custom places on the net for 1/2 the price if I choose to go that route.
You what you pay for. If you feel the need for custom use you foot doc for a proper fit and adjustment(s) that are often needed. — Caveat Lector "the further you go outside, the further you go inside" – B. McKibben Doug Freese

In the "FWIW" category, when I first started running again after my AT/PF 5 yrs ago, I used spenco insoles without too much trouble. Then ended up getting $400 custom orthotics and they worked reasonably well for several years. When I was talking with the shoe folks at REI last spring, they had made me aware that they can do some types of orthotics – they have off-the shelf as well as various forms of fitting. (I wasn’t looking for orthotics, but they came up in conversation.) BUT when he looked at my existing orthotics, he could see things about them they would not be able to do with REI’s insoles/orthotics. (Caveat: I used to regard REI right up there with mall stores since I had terrible luck with them and their equipment for several years. I re-tried them a year ago and have been pleasantly surprised by the level of expertise, but they *do* rotate among departments. So I’m not sure how knowledgeable the people in their shoe department really are, but buyer beware.) During some gait analyses last spring (computerized) and this summer (PT), some biomechanics issues were detected, esp. in toe area, that suggest I should have a full orthotic, rather than the 3/4 one that I’ve got (stops right where I really need the support, and it was done by an orthopaedist, but he never watched me walk or run). The gait analysis was consistent with some niggling toe problems I was having last winter. So I’ll probably end up with full-length orthotics, which will have some advantages for me in terms of getting feet and orthotic in knee-high and winter boots. But so far we are dealing with strengthening some muscle imbalances before we can see what is really needed for an orthotic. My thoughts: for me, orthotics seem to help immensely. Hopefully, getting the right kind will help even more. Others have found that off-the-shelf have worked for them, at least in the short term. My guess it depends on exactly what your problem is and whether you’re willing to do other things to reduce the need. I am being patient in the short term with the hopes of long-term improvement. Good luck. Dot

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – OK runners, I should have known better than to brag about having no injuries. I’m more than 1/2 way in a 6 month marathon program. After my 20K race, I couldn’t walk the next day because I couldn’t bear any weight on my right foot. I had intense pain on the outside of my foot, 1/2 between my heel and the bump in the middle of your foot. There is a definite spot on top of my foot that is painful to palpation. Here is a description I found on the net that matches what I feel: Towards the end of the set I started to get lateral heel pain and since then I have found it painful to walk with pain on the lateral aspect of the heel posterior to the 5th metatarsal head possibly the cuboid. It is very tender to palpation at that point and laterally ap the side of my hindfoot halfway up to the lateral malleolus. After 3 days, I could run again, and did. It got better and was fine through my long run of 7 miles the next week. The week after that is this week and I had 10 miles. It was hurting at 5 miles but I continued and wasn’t losing any time, just in pain. The next day, today, I couldn’t walk. Placing my foot on the floor from the bed was intense pain. I took 4 Ibuprofen and laid there for a while and managed to get a hot shower and make it through the day. I tried to run tonite but it hurt too bad. OK, it looks almost certain to be Cuboid Syndrome or at least some type of problem in the Cuboid or connective tissues in that area. 1. Anyone have any experience with the treatment of this? 2. Can it be shoe related? I have Asics Gel Kayanos which are great support shoes and top of the line Asics. I logged over 100 miles in them with no injury. 3. What is the usual outcome? I have to be able to keep on running.
amazing, the plethora of excuses that these wimps have to avoid RUNNING, no excuses!!! just RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN

May be a coincidence, but I’ve started developing mild plantar fasciitis (or something similar) in my left foot. I also run in Gel Kayanos, and they have been excellent up to now, but they are 10 months old and the soles at the front have worn down a fair bit. Time to buy a new pair I think. My physiotherapist says that running shoes should be replaced approx. every 150km, but I can’t afford new Kayanos every 5 weeks! DK
